Animal Control

Animal control services are provided by Plainfield Area Humane Society, covering some of the following services:

  • Pickup of stray domestic animals - WITH THE EXCEPTION OF DEER
  • Pick up of dead wildlife in roadway - WITH THE EXCEPTION OF DEER
  • Enforcement of animal humane regulations
  • Enforcement of state and local licensing and animal ordinances
  • Report lost or found animals

If you have to report any of the above, please call 908-754-0300.


To report a dead dear in the roadway, please call the Scotch Plains Police non-emergency number :  908-322-7100 ext. 0  You will be asked to provide the location.  If the animal is on personal property, the resident is responsible for arranging to get the carcass to the side of road before removal.


Dog and cat bites are required by law to be reported to the local health department 908-322-6700 ext. 309 and local police 908-322-7100 ext. 0. 


An annual free Rabies vaccination clinic is held each year in the spring and fall; please check the website periodically for dates. You can take your pet to any town in Union County for this service.

Trapping of Wildlife

Residents should be aware that trapping healthy wildlife is regulated by the New Jersey Department of Fish and Game and either a trapper's permit or a depredation permit is required under State Law.  Under these regulations the loaning of traps to residents is prohibited.  Residents may contact the New Jersey Fish and Game nuisance animal relocation hotline at 908-735-8793 or a private wildlife removal company for further assistance.  A list of permit requirements and regulations can be found below.

Reclaiming Pet

Contact our office for info on which vet your dog/cat has been taken to (Proof of ownership & rabies shot required by law before release of animal). Or you can contact the Animal Shelter at 908-754-0300
