Message from Councilmember Elizabeth Stamler – August 14, 2026

On behalf of the township’s Green Team, allow me to share important information about a new statewide law that you may notice the next time you grab lunch, order takeout or visit one of our local restaurants.

As of August 1, New Jersey’s new “Skip the Stuff” law went into effect. Now, instead of automatically putting plastic utensils, condiment packets and other single-use items into every order, restaurants will provide them upon request.

So, what does that mean for all of us?

When ordering takeout, just remember to request the utensils, condiments or straws you need when you place your order. If you’re taking dinner home and already have forks and knives, you can simply choose “no cutlery.”

At a full-service restaurant, you’ll continue to receive reusable, washable utensils and condiments, which will generally be served in bottles or portion cups. At more casual restaurants, you may find self-service utensil and condiment stations or be asked what you need when ordering. And if you need a plastic straw, you can still request one.

It may take a little getting used to, but there’s a good reason for the change. According to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, plastic items make up 83% of marine and coastal debris in our state. Plastic can remain in the environment for hundreds of years, finding its way into our streets, parks and waterways and posing a danger to our local wildlife.

The DEP has launched a publicity campaign to help make the transition easier for both customers and businesses. They’re encouraging all of us to take only what we need and, when it’s convenient, use reusable utensils and straws.

For our local restaurants and food businesses, the DEP has also put together guides, signs, training materials and other resources to help everyone understand the new rules.

I know change can sometimes lead to a little confusion at first, so I wanted to make sure Scotch Plains residents know what to expect. The next time you order from one of our wonderful local restaurants, remember: if you need a fork, some ketchup or a straw, just ask!

It’s a small change. But if all of us make a few small changes together, they can add up to a cleaner Scotch Plains and a cleaner New Jersey.
