Scam Alert: Protect Yourself from Online and Phone Scams

Due to a significant increase in fraud cases reported in our area, the Scotch Plains Police Department is reminding residents to remain vigilant against online and over-the-phone scams. Criminals are becoming increasingly sophisticated, often posing as government agencies, law enforcement, banks, utility companies, delivery services, or even family members in distress.

Remember:

• Never provide personal, banking, or financial information to unsolicited callers or through suspicious emails or text messages.
• Do not send money, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or payment through apps at the request of someone you do not know or have not independently verified.
•  Be cautious of messages creating a sense of urgency or threatening immediate consequences if you don't act.
• Verify requests by contacting the organization directly using a trusted phone number or website—not the contact information provided in the suspicious message.
• If something doesn't feel right, trust your instincts and speak with a trusted family member or friend before taking action.
