Message from Councilman Roshan (Roc) White | February 6, 2026

As a community, Scotch Plains has long taken pride in looking out for one another and standing up for what is right, especially when it comes to protecting the most vulnerable.

At our most recent Township Council meeting, we reaffirmed that commitment by adopting a proclamation focused on raising awareness of human trafficking and strengthening support for survivors. This action reflects our shared values and commitment in Scotch Plains toward confronting a crime that too often exists in the shadows.

Human trafficking is not a distant or abstract issue. It happens in communities across the country, including here in New Jersey. As our state prepares to host multiple events connected to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, including the final match at MetLife Stadium, we must recognize the reality that large, international events can increase the risk of trafficking and exploitation.

Scotch Plains is committed to doing its part before, during and after the World Cup to ensure that our community is informed, alert and prepared as millions of people are expected to visit our region during the competition. That starts with education—helping residents recognize the warning signs and what steps to take if what you see does not seem right.

Awareness saves lives, and an informed community is one of the strongest tools we have to prevent exploitation.

Just as important is our responsibility to support survivors with compassion, dignity and respect. Survivors of human trafficking deserve to be heard, believed, and supported as they rebuild their lives.

At our meeting, the Township Council commended the New Jersey Coalition Against Human Trafficking for its survivor-inclusive work to combat trafficking through education, advocacy, and direct support. Their efforts remind us that effective solutions must center on the voices and experiences of those most affected.

We will continue to partner with advocacy organizations, law enforcement, service providers, and community leaders to address this issue head-on. But government and police cannot solve this problem without all of us.

Preventing trafficking requires vigilance and involvement—neighbors looking out for neighbors, businesses staying informed, and residents altering authorities.

The World Cup will bring excitement, cultural exchange and global attention to New Jersey. By remaining proactive and united, we can help ensure it is remembered for celebration and community—not exploitation.
